In the past, many subreddits have allowed custom comment faces on the old Reddit design. By typing a specific link format, such as [](#garlock), in a comment, the subreddit's stylesheet would transform that link into an image. However, with the new Reddit design, community CSS is no longer supported, resulting in comment faces either not showing up at all or appearing as broken links.
New Reddit comment faces overcomes this limitation by applying the community's CSS to comment face links, allowing them to be displayed and used again. Additionally, it also works for various other old CSS hacks, such as named spoiler tags.
